Greetings

  • Shake hands, both in greeting and upon departure.
  • Never leave your left hand in your pocket while shaking hands.
Introductions
  • Many Dutch state their last names during an introduction. (Traditionally, only family and close friends use first names.)
  • However, many Dutch executives may quickly suggest going to a first name basis to make you feel comfortable.
Appointments
  • The Dutch value planning and efficient use of time. Arriving even a few minutes late may cause them to doubt your competency or trustworthiness!
Negotiating
  • Decision making in Dutch firms is often based upon consensus. The process can therefore take a good deal of time.
  • Many Dutch are not comfortable saying no. Instead, they may predict insurmountable complications.
  • Modesty is admired; exaggeration or ostentation is abhorred.
Entertaining
  • Social events are carefully scheduled -- the Dutch rarely "do lunch" on a moment's notice.
  • Always use utensils. Many Dutch even eat bread with a knife and fork!
